It can feel that the disease becomes your identity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>CF was a fatal disease in 1971, when I was born. The average\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.atsjournals.org\/doi\/10.1164\/rccm.200505-840OE\">life expectancy at the time was 12<\/a>. My\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/cysticfibrosisnewstoday.com\/symptoms-of-cystic-fibrosis\/\">symptoms<\/a>\u00a0were mild when I was young, so my mom decided not to share that prognosis with me. Back then, pancreatic enzymes and antibiotics were the only medications available to treat CF.
