Sanyal discusses the institute\u2019s biggest strides in its first year and next steps on the path to advancing liver health.<\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>By Olivia Trani<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In December 2021, Virginia Commonwealth University shared its plan to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/news.vcu.edu\/article\/2021\/12\/vcu-to-create-institute-for-liver-disease-and-metabolic-health\">create an institute<\/a>\u00a0for liver disease and metabolic health, building on the university\u2019s legacy of championing liver health through translational research, education and clinical care. Just two months following the announcement, in February 2022, the institute received a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/news.vcu.edu\/article\/2022\/02\/state-of-the-university-announcement-to-transform-liver-care-at-vcu\">historic $104 million gift<\/a>, the largest publicly shared donation for liver research in U.S. history, from R.
