That means, theoretically, the lungs could be transplanted into any recipient, regardless of their&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/36559-common-blood-type-donation.html\"><u>blood type<\/u><\/a>, as long as the organs were the appropriate size.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the new study, published Wednesday (Feb. 16) in the journal\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/www.science.org\/doi\/10.1126\/scitranslmed.abm7190?adobe_mc=MCMID%3D23093234137653293603044630514166490186%7CMCORGID%3D242B6472541199F70A4C98A6%2540AdobeOrg%7CTS%3D1645026375&amp;_ga=2.171993955.1369783116.1644849411-258772416.1572545294\" target=\"_blank\"><u>Science Translational Medicine<\/u><\/a>, the researchers ran experiments on the universal\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/52250-lung.html\"><u>lungs<\/u><\/a>\u00a0in an\u00a0<em>ex vivo<\/em>\u00a0lung perfusion (EVLP) device, which keeps lungs alive outside the body. Within the next year-and-a-half, the study authors plan to test such organs in a clinical trial with human recipients, Dr. Marcelo Cypel, the surgical director of the Ajmera Transplant Centre, a professor of surgery at the University of Toronto and senior author of the study, told Live Science.
