What is baggage? According to Merriam-Webster, it’s one of three things: suitcases, transportable equipment, or intangible things such as feelings and circumstances that get in the way. What kind of baggage do people living with pulmonary hypertension (PH) often take everywhere they go?

The answer: all of it!

Pulmonary Hypertension Ups Kidney Graft Dysfunction Risk

Pulmonary hypertension is associated with increased risk for graft dysfunction after kidney transplantation, investigators report.

Among 350 patients who received a single kidney transplant from 2010 to 2011 at Emory Transplant Center in Atlanta, Georgia, 117 (33%) had preoperative pulmonary hypertension based on echocardiography. Read the full story in Renal & Urology News.

Pulmonary hypertension common in kidney transplant recipients

Patients with pulmonary hypertension who underwent kidney transplantation had similar posttransplant outcomes at 5 years compared with those without pretransplant pulmonary hypertension, researchers reported in Pulmonary Circulation.

“Pulmonary hypertension more than doubles the risk of all-cause and cardiovascular-specific mortality in those on dialysis, and it increases the risk of adverse perioperative outcomes including death in noncardiac surgeries irrespective of kidney function.
