This summer, the last thing on Kaitlin Seigel’s mind was whether she’d be able to enjoy a Thanksgiving meal with her family.

The 15-year-old from Clark, New Jersey, felt nauseous all the time. She was listless and all the color was gone from her face. She couldn’t eat, and the lack of nourishment was making her weak. She didn’t want to hang out with her friends or take part in any school activities, fearful she might get sick. The isolation made her sad and anxious.

It is not often that responding to an email leads to saving someone’s life, but that is what happened to Clarkston school district teacher Jessica Sorensen.

She teaches grades three, four, and five in Clarkston’s virtual program and Dennis Klenow teaches third grade at Independence Elementary; the two have been friends for over 20 years. Nolan and his uncle Jon are both tall and blonde, but they now have something more in common: The two have an unbreakable bond, thanks to a selfless —and lucky — gift that changed Nolan’s life forever.

The first year after Nolan was born, his primary care physician ran some blood work to try to explain Nolan’s slow weight gain, or “failure to thrive,” which can interfere with brain development and other developmental issues. Nolan’s mother remembers that, “Nolan’s pediatrician told us to get him to Boston Children’s Hospital immediately because his lab tests were concerning. We had no idea what that meant, but we knew Boston Children’s was where we’d find out.”
