Researchers at the Medical College of Georgia at Augusta University, US, developed a humanised mouse model that shows great promise in identifying a patient’s best match for a living organ donor and also holds promise for recognising the earliest signs that the recipient’s immune system may start attacking that new organ. Social determinants of health tied to long-term employment after heart transplant

A database analysis showed 22% of heart transplant recipients who survived to 1 year and received follow-up were employed full time at 1 year and nearly 33% were employed at 2 years after transplant.

In a retrospective analysis of more than 10,000 heart transplant recipients who survived to 1 year with follow-up, researchers also found that employment at the time of listing or transplantation was strongly associated with employment after surgery. Read the full story in Healio.

New record set for annual organ transplants in US

The number of organs transplanted in 2022 set a new annual record at 42,887 transplants in the U.S., including more than 25,000 kidney transplants for the first time, according to a press release from the United Network of Organ Sharing.

There was an overall 3.7% increase in transplants since 2021 and a 3.4% increase in kidney transplants. Specifically, 25,498 kidney transplants were performed. Records were also set for liver, heart and lung transplants. Read more in Healio.
