Trial Results Indicate Potential for Organ Transplantation Without Long-Term Immunosuppression

PITTSBURGH — Giving living donor liver transplant recipients an infusion of immune cells derived from their donor a week before transplantation is feasible, safe — and may lead to recipients being successfully weaned off immunosuppressant medications without rejecting the transplanted organ.

The early-stage clinical trial results by University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine scientists, reported today in Science Translational Medicine, point to a path that may spare organ transplant recipients from the serious side effects of long-term immunosuppressant use, which can include cancer, diabetes, kidney failure and susceptibility to infections. The new method offers an improved strategy for organ allocation by taking into account how the time a patient has spent on the waiting list could impact the severity of their disease and the urgency of their need for a transplant.

The U.S. House of Representatives has approved, as part of its 2023 Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) reauthorization bill, a provision aimed at enhancing efficiencies of the transportation of donor organs through the nation’s commercial aviation system.

Section 834 of H.R. 3934, the Securing Growth and Robust Leadership in American Aviation Act, requires the Secretary of the Department of Transportation (DOT), in consultation with the FAA Administrator, to convene a working group to develop best practices for the transportation of an organ in the cabin of an aircraft.
