Kidney Transplant Survival Benefit Greater for Patients on Dialysis

Deceased donor kidney transplantation (DDKT) confers a greater survival benefit to adult waitlist candidates on dialysis than those managed preemptively, investigators reported at the 2022 American Transplant Congress (ATC 2022) in Boston, Massachusetts.

The current US Kidney Allocation System (KAS) allows for DDKT candidates not yet on dialysis to accrue waiting time points by listing at a transplant center with a low estimated glomerular filtration rate. Read the full story in Renal & Urology News.

NEW ORLEANS — Mental health care delivery needs a paradigm shift, according to a review that was published in the American Journal of Psychiatry and presented at the American Psychiatric Association (APA) annual meeting.

Mental health professionals should move from an individual therapy and pharmacological treatment-focused approach to a community-level, public mental health-focused approach to achieve a more equitable model of mental health care, said Margarita Alegría, PhD, of Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School in Boston, and colleagues.

Fewer Headache Days With Acupuncture

— Chronic tension headache patients experience relief with 8-week treatment course

Acupuncture helped reduce the frequency of chronic tension-type headaches (CTTH), a randomized controlled trial in China found.

More than two-thirds (68.2%) of people with CTTH who received true acupuncture reported at least a 50% reduction in the number of monthly headache days at week 16, compared with 48.1% who had superficial acupuncture (OR 2.65, 95% CI 1.5-4.77), reported Ying Li, MD, PhD, of Chengdu University of Traditional Chinese Medicine in China, and colleagues in Neurology. Racial disparities strongest among young adults on home dialysis, transplant recipients

Racial and ethnic disparities in kidney replacement therapies were most pronounced among patients aged 22 to 44 years who are either transplant recipients or on home dialysis, according to data in the American Journal of Kidney Diseases.

Transplantation within 7 days of listing boosts survival in acute-on-chronic liver failure

LONDON — Early liver transplantation within 7 days of listing was linked to improved 90-day and 1-year survival among patients with grade 3 acute-on-chronic liver failure, according to data presented at the International Liver Congress.

“Currently, the ideal time frame between listing and liver transplantation to achieve optimal patient outcome in [grade 3 acute-on-chronic liver failure] is not known,” Joseph J. Physicians Transplant Kidneys into Children Without Immune Suppressing Drugs

​Three pediatric patients with a rare genetic disease that causes kidney failure have successfully been treated with transplanted kidneys without using anti-rejection drugs or treatments.

Experts at Stanford University treated three children with a rare condition called Schimke immuno-osseous dysplasia (SIOD).
